The University at Buffalo (UB), The State University of New York
(SUNY), invites applications and nominations for a visionary leader
as Vice Provost and Director of University Libraries. The
University at Buffalo, a member of the prestigious Association of
American Universities (AAU), is SUNY's most comprehensive
research-intensive university and its primary center for
professional education, currently enrolling over 27,000 students
and offering 300 degree programs (baccalaureate, master's,
doctoral, and first professional). Home to over 150 research
centers and institutes, UB's research expenditures for FY 2007-2008
totaled approximately $348 million.
The Vice Provost and Director of UB Libraries has several major
responsibilities: providing a strategic vision; leading the
planning and advancement of the UB Libraries; leading innovation in
the Libraries' collections, user services, and digital presence;
ensuring sound management; representing the UB Libraries locally,
nationally, and internationally; and leading philanthropic and
other funding efforts. The incumbent reports directly to the
Provost/Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Preferred Qualifications:
* A distinguished national/international reputation for sustained
scholarly accomplishments, and a record of excellence in teaching,
research, and service appropriate to appointment at the rank of
Full Professor at a major research university.
* An earned doctorate and an MLS (Master of Library Science) from a
program accredited by the American Library Association, or
equivalent.
* Substantive and successful experience as librarian/higher
education administrator.
* Ability to work effectively with university senior leadership and
with faculty in implementing an ambitious academic plan.
* Commitment to diversity among faculty, staff, and students.
* Strong management skills and experience.
* Expertise in collections development, user services, and new
technology applications.
* The highest standards of personal and academic integrity and
ethical and professional conduct.
The UB library system, the largest in SUNY, is known for its
wide-ranging digital resources and world-renowned special
collections. The UB Libraries belong to the Association of Research
Libraries (ARL) and are viewed as a national leader in access to
and delivery of high value digital and print resources to the
University and global academic communities. The 3.7 million volumes
of the UB Libraries include 578,000 e-books, and the periodical
holdings include over 80,000 scholarly journal subscriptions
consisting of 48,400 electronic serials of which almost 20,000 are
accessible as full-text e-journals; the holdings also include 5.4
million microforms, 85,000 music recordings, 1.1 million ArtStor
images, and a substantial multimedia collection. The UB Libraries
include ten distinct facilities including Law and Health Sciences
Libraries.
